Meridiana

Concert

Energy, passion, rhythm, magic, the key characteristics that define the performances of the Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, Salento's first and foremost folk music group. Acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, CGS reinterprets in a modern key the traditions that revolve around the famous pizzica tarantata, a dance ritual that had the power to cure the tarantula bite through music, dance and trance.

The beating of the drums gives rhythm to time as emotions do to the heart. The seductive voices hypnotise and soothe. Violins create psychedelic atmospheres of yearning. The accordion, strings and woodwinds mingle with electronic sounds releasing the scents of the south.

At Oriente Occidente, CGS will present songs from their latest album Meridiana, which, shortly after its release, was heralded as “Top of the world” by the English Songlines Magazine, the most prestigious World Music magazine. A music project that pays tribute to the memory of Daniele Durante, who founded the Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino with Rina Durante in 1975, Meridiana combines tradition and modernity in a unique sound, the signature sound of this band from Salento.

Traditional songs at rocket speed: that’s the music of Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino. Songs that may date back millenniums flew by in a whirlwind of tambourine rhythms and the call-and-response of raw voices that aligned in harmony.
