Colokolo, established in 2013 in Casablanca, was one of the first contemporary circus collectives in Morocco and brings together artists from different disciplines and urban dance performers. Several members of Colokolo – by now a hub of excellence for the discipline in the North African country - have specialised in aerial acrobatics.
Chouf le ciel! results from this further step towards the thrill of height and has its national premiere at the Festival. It is an electrifying mix of acrobatics, juggling and hip hop set to traditional music. The jaw-dropping technique and euphoria of Korean and Hungarian-style plank jumping are matched at ground level, where dancing and sounds from the Gnawa and Chaâbi traditions (a Maghrebi blend of rural and urban music) combine with cutting-edge electro and the wildest rap.
In Chouf le ciel there are six men, five pairs of trousers and a dress, folk songs, a bride-less Moroccan wedding, a hamalate (a woman carrying merchandise to the Moroccan-Spanish border) and lots of flights at dizzying heights of up to nine metres, hovering on the impossible.
Our work consists of trying to develop the identity of the performing arts, at least in the circus sector, with a Moroccan touch.
Free admission event. In case of rain, the performance will be cancelled.
