It can never be the same is an exhibition in the streets and squares of Rovereto that brings together a selection of images from the photographic book of the same name by Lorenzo Tugnoli and Francesca Recchia.
Taken between 2019 and 2023, the photographs narrate a transforming Afghanistan: from the peace negotiations between the United States and the Taliban, to the collapse of the Afghan republic and the return to power of the Taliban regime. This is not a traditional reportage, but a visual journey that challenges pre-constituted views of the country: shot in black and white, the images evoke the tradition of classic photojournalism, but break with its codes, choosing an open and reflective narrative.
Tugnoli, Pulitzer Prize winner, mixes personal experience with an investigation into how images help shape, or often maybe distort, our perception of reality. The exhibition encourages us to think about the role of the observer and the power of photography in telling stories, inviting us to rediscover complexity as a tool for interpretation.
